How to make a Playful Pennants Card

This is the finished product we are aiming for. To make this you will need:

Chocolate Chip card stock

White card stock

Chocolate Chip gross grain ribbon

Chocolate Chip Classic stampin' pad

Petite Pennants Builder Punch

Playful Pennants Stamp Set

Part of a brown paper bag

Glue or adhesive

Needle and thread

Scissors and paper trimmer

We will start by cutting the base for the card, use your paper trimmer to cut a sheet of brown card stock in half, and then fold it in half again.

Then cut some white card stock in half, and in half again, to get a piece of white card stock the same size as the front of your brown card.

We need to trim this piece of white card stock down further so that there is a brown border on the card, so cut at least 1cm off of the short and long edge, depending on how much of an edge you want.

Then you need to stamp the white card with your matching ink pad and any patterned or background stamp that you like. I have used Stampin' Up!'s Chocolate Chip ink pad and card stock, and a stamp from an old set called 'Beyond the Basics' that you can't order anymore, but you can use any patterned background and any colours you like.

Trim a matching ribbon to be just slightly longer than the white card stock, with about 1cm overhang on either side. I have used Stampin' Up! grossgrain ribbon, also in Chocolate Chip colour, this is the double stitched 1 inch width ribbon if you are looking to purchase it.

Stick the ribbon to the back of the white card stock with your glue or adhesive. Make sure you don't pull it too tight, or you will cause the white card to bend, and it won't stick properly to the brown card later.

Cut a strip of white card approximately one inch wide and about six inches long. Use your Chocolate Chip stamp pad and your stamp from your Playful Pennants stamp set to stamp this image on the strip of card.

Due to the alignment in the punch, you should stamp the pointy end of this larger pennant towards the edge of your strip, this will make the next step easier.

Turn your Petite Pennants Builder Punch upside down so that you can line up the image as shown, before you stamp it. Once the image is lined up, while holding the end of the strip, use your other hand to push down on the Punch. You will need two of these so cut off any excess at the end of the strip and repeat this process.

Choose which pattern you want on stop of your pennant, and using your Chocolate Chip stamp pad again, stamp this image on your strip of white card stock.

Due to the alignment in the punch, you should stamp the pointy end of the smaller pennants towards the middle of your strip, that is the wide end of the smaller penant should face the edge. This will make the next step easier.

Turn your Petite Pennants Builder Punch upside down so that you can line up the image as shown, before you stamp it. Once the image is lined up, while holding the end of the strip, use your other hand to push down on the Punch. You will need two of these so cut off any excess at the end of the strip and repeat this process.

Using a strip from your brown paper bag, stamp two of the larger pennants and two of the smaller pennants.

Stick your flags together, as shown, with your glue or adhesive. Don't use too much glue or they will curl.

To make the sewing part easier, put a hole in the pennants, at the two corners on the shortest side, at the edge of the smaller pennant. I am using a stitch unpicker here but you could also do it with your needle.

Tie a knot in your thread, and thread it through the back of the white card stock as shown, to anchor one side of your pennants or bunting.

I like to start by threading the pennant from front to back, so that most of the string can't be seen. If you are using a brightly coloured string, you might like to start from back to front, so that most of the string can be seen.

I go from front to back, behind the pennant, then from back to front.

Thread all of your pennants together in this fashion, don't forget to alternate them.

When you have threaded all four, anchor it to the other side of the white card by threading through the white card from front to back and tieing a knot behind the card where you won't be able to see it. Also, when you stick the card to the brown background, you can make sure the adhesive goes over the two knots behind the card so that they are doubly secured.

Stick your completed white card to your brown back ground and, congratulations, you have completed your card.

I also like to trim down a bit of white card stock and stick it on the inside of the card on the side I will write on, because writing on brown card is difficult.

Additionally, you might like to use the "Happy Birthday to you" stamp in the Playful Pennants stamp set to put Happy Birthday on the front, or in the middle of the card. I like to leave my cards uncommitted, so that I can use them for Happy Birthday, Happy Father's Day, Congratulations on your (new home, new baby, new job), or as a Thank You card.
